In order to impart higher education to the people of greater Hajo area, Suren Das College was established in 29th August, 1979. The selfless devotion and sacrifice of the people of the locality have graduated this institution into a leading college in Assam, and now it is standing with glory as their cherished offspring in the form of an Autonomous College. The College was affiliated to Gauhati University in 1984, brought under Deficit-grants-in-Aid system of the government of Assam in 1987, provincialized by the government of Assam in 2005 under The Assam College Employee (Provincialisation) Act, 2005 and registered under 2-f &12-b of UGC in 1998. Suren Das College (now autonomous) has transitioned, in a matter of few years only, from single stream in Arts to multiple streams accommodating programmes such as FYUGP in B.A./B.Sc./ B.C.A./B.Voc. in MLT and P.G. in Political Science and Assamese. The NCTE has also recognized our institution to introduce integrated B.A.-B.Ed. and B.Sc.-B.Ed. under the Integrated Teachers’ Education Programme (ITEP) from the session 2026-2027. This college was re-accredited with “A” grade by NAAC during the third cycle of assessment in February 2023. The UGC has also granted Autonomous Status to this College vide UGC’s letter no. F.2-10/2023 (AC-Policy) dated 18 July 2025, for 10 years (From the academic session 2025-26 to 2034-35 as per clause 7.5 of the UGC regulations, 2023) with the endorsement from the affiliating Gauhati University vide letter no. GU/AFF/2025 dated 29/07/2025.
